Earth Day Challenge - Day 3: Community Cleanup
Today is officially Earth Day, and we are so excited to spend this day giving our planet the respect and love it deserves. Though many of us are spending more time at home to practice social distancing, there are still many great opportunities to get out and show the earth a little extra love through our 5-day Earth Day Challenge! And today’s activity is extra special!
This Earth Day, we challenge you to make the world a better and cleaner place by picking up garbage, waste, and plastic that you come across in your local park, neighborhood, or beach. While you can invite your family to join in on the fun, be sure to practice proper social distancing throughout your cleanup activity and adhere to all safety rules and criteria. So, are you up to the challenge? If so, grab some gloves, trash bags, and a comfortable pair of walking shoes!
How Can a Pickup Help the Environment?
Not only does plastic waste negatively impact wildlife and the environment, but it is extremely detrimental to our own public health. As a planet with 71% of the surface covered in water, it is frightening to know that there are collections of trash as big as 617,763 square miles floating in the ocean. Pair that with the fact that, out of every 6.3 billion metric tons of waste produced, only 9% has been recycled.
With most of the plastic waste we generate accumulating in landfills or the natural environment, it is more important than ever to take a stand and effectively remove the buildup of litter on our planet. By actively pursuing a cleaner environment and reducing the amount of litter and waste in our communities, we can push for a healthier and more sustainable existence for many years to come.
